Marketing strategy guru Sean D’Souza believes in using the most effective collaboration and personal productivity tools to handle an intensive daily schedule, in which he interacts on multiple levels with customers worldwide.
As head of New Zealand-based PsychoTactics (www.psychotactics.com), Sean consults with large corporations as well as medium sized and small companies. He also writes books, articles and speeches. He runs workshops, creates educational audio tapes and holds teleclasses.
Underpinning all this activity is Mindjet MindManager software that visually connects ideas, information and people to save time, improve business processes and drive innovation.
“We have used MindManager for many years. Most of our documentation is generated in it, and there is probably no presentation, course or other initiative that is not created using MindManager,” says Sean. “Over the years, we’ve made sure that Mindjet is well in the face of thousands of our customers.”
Before discovering the visual productivity tool, he used smart drawing software, whose complexity ‘drove me insane.’ When a lawyer friend recommended MindManager, Sean was sceptical, but soon it was helping him to run his business life.
He recalls: “I began putting all my information on MindManager, inputting notes and pictures at the click of a mouse. Essentially I did a complete reversal, from not wanting to put anything on MindManager, to not wanting to do anything without it!
“I found it was great. It helps me to think. Yesterday I was watching YouTube video on The Writer’s Journey, which talks about how scriptwriting is done for major movies. I was sitting in a cafe, opened up MindManager and mapped the entire writer’s journey. It gave me a structure and a starting point. Without MindManager I would have made notes and possibly lost them.
“Whenever I get an idea, I either jot it down or put it into MindManager, although eventually everything goes into MindManager because I can use it to store information and transfer it to any format I choose. It’s all beautifully simple.”
Sean says that while blogs talk about MindManager’s multiple colours, he prefers to use a plain and simple interface: “I just take what’s in my brain, put it on paper and have access to the idea when I want it.”
PsychoTactics’ people also use the software for collaboration. Creation of the firm’s web site was an example, where up to 30 people worldwide worked together contributing ideas and discussing progress.
“The were all jumping in at any time or day or night and putting in their bits of information. It was so stimulating – like a visual forum or bulletin board,” said Sean.
More often PsychoTactics’ people use the tool’s mind-mapping capabilities for work that includes article writing, creation of information products such as how to write advertising copy or sales letters. MindManager is also used to help the firm to support its courses online.
The software helps Sean with presentations. When he presents to a conference, he has MindManager on screen and follows its guidelines. If he plans to interview someone and needs to follow specific guidelines, he sends a MindManager map file outlining the questions so they know what to expect.
He says: “If I want to explain anything to anyone, I take a screen shot of MindManager and upload it to the forum to stimulate discussion. I can’t think of a single day that in which I don’t use MindManager at least once. It’s probably the most used application that we have.
“Occasionally someone will ask me why I don’t use this or that free mind-mapping software. I tell them there is nothing to touch MindManager and that we recommend it to all our clients. Usually after using it, they buy it. I can’t recall ever running into anyone who doesn’t like it.”
